About the company
Karlka Recruiting Group has partnered with a Federal Government Agency to engage an EL1-Indigenous Data Specialist. This position is located in their busy Canberra office for an initial casual 6 months contract until 31.03.2026.  
  
About the Position
The company is committed to ensuring that data about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is governed in a way that respects their rights, priorities, and cultural values. This is part of the organisation broader commitment under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap to transform how government works with Indigenous communities.  

Duties

  • Facilitate co-design, implementation of Indigenous Data Governance mechanisms in partnership with Indigenous communities. 
  • Advise and draft Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles into organisation programs, policies, and data initiatives. 
  • Support and deliver capability-building activities. 
  • Community members related to data governance and management.
  • Identify improved access and transparency for Indigenous communities. 
  • Draft executive briefings, progress reports, and strategic recommendations to company leadership on Indigenous data matters.
  • Provide cultural expertise to enhance cultural safety and understanding within company data governance practices and training.
  • Provide Indigenous perspectives and priorities for drafting in all relevant data policy discussions and organisational initiatives.

Requirements/ Knowledge and Experience

  • Strong understanding of Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles and their application within government data governance frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
  • communities, with a focus building partnerships and facilitating shared decision making. 
  • Proven track record in leading or contributing to the implementation of governance frameworks, policies and strategic initiatives in a government /community setting.  
  • Knowledge of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, particularly Priority Reforms Three (Transforming Government Organisations) and Four (Shared Access to Data and Information).
  • Experience in providing cultural advice to senior leaders in a government or large organisational context.
