About the company
Karlka Recruiting Group has partnered with a Federal Government Agency to engage multiple Independent Decision Makers (IDMs). Several contractors will be onboarded and a merit pool will also be established. 
  
About the IDMs
IDMs are engaged by the National Redress Scheme Operator under the National Redress Scheme for Institutional Child Sexual Abuse Act 2018 (Cth) (Redress Act) to assist in making redress determinations.

The current IDMs have a broad range of knowledge and experience. You may be suitable if your background is in: 

  • Law/Legal/Barrister services 
  • Policy development 
  • Psychology/Senior Social Workers
  • High performing roles that rely on interpreting legislation 
  • Indigenous affairs

Duties
IDMs consider whether a person is eligible for redress by interpreting and applying the Act, policy and relevant legislation to applications in a procedurally fair manner.  IDMs make clear, well-reasoned and timely decisions based on relevant criteria and information held by the Scheme. In this role you will:

  • consider whether a person is eligible for redress under the legislation
  • understand the circumstances of each case and apply the internal assessment guidelines
  • make clear, well-reasoned and timely decisions in complex situations
  • conduct internal reviews of decisions as required
  • escalate politically sensitive and/or complex cases as required
  • work through complex and highly emotional/heavy cases and content. 

Skills
IDMs must have strong analytical skills, be able to interpret legislation, and the ability to anticipate problems or sensitivities. Experience in applying Trauma Informed Framework/s is required. IDMs must be able to deliver determinations in a manner that promotes fairness, transparency, and public trust in the Scheme.
IDMs should be able to identify their relevant experience and qualifications in sectors including, but not limited to, social welfare, case management, policy, psychology, Indigenous affairs, and/or legal. IDMs must have a strong understanding of the cultural, social, historical, and political factors relevant to the Scheme. IDMs are expected to utilise trauma-informed language and adhere to their statutory duties.

Requirements 

  • Understanding of the National Redress Scheme – https://www.nationalredress.gov.au/
  • Resilience and high emotional intelligence
  • Understanding of Trauma-Informed Principles
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline Security Clearance 
  • Ability to travel to Canberra for initial training (2 weeks in early 2025. Dates will not be booked until the successful IDMs are selected) and workshops throughout the year.
